My fellow crafters, I must admit weakness. I fell almost completely apart under the weight of my daily promotion duties when I added one more chore - columnist for HMN News. Because my chosen department is not one in which I am expert, to say the least, extensive research is needed for each of my columns. That, a chance for an exclusive jewelry show,and remodeling my studio (which has major problems since the change to fusion squared off pix, and was in the process of being reorganized already) and daily guild blogs (which I haven't managed for a couple months at least) and Crazy Train blogs on every other day and Forum responses and Sneakers Tuesday did me in. All this should be manageable, some of you may say, since I'm not working, but I have the job search and actually enjoying my hobby as well. I'm still learning most of these thngs, so they are time intensive. I simply couldn't do it. And it depressed me that I couldn't. I don't want to give up any of these things, but I just must cut back.

I'll blog once or twice a week on each blog. That means that I will promote the crazy train rider in the Forums and on Facebook and Twitter through Plurk. At the end of the week, whichever day it ends up falling on, I will do a quick introduction of each Crazy Train rider for the week on my blog. I will continue to do RSS feeds for them. Not sure if it will be daily or weekly.

I will continue my research for HMN and my columns, especially now that the output requirements have been changed. I will spend a minimal time in the forums and almost no time on Plurk or Twitter or other venues until I establish a routine that is comfortable. I hope you will forgive my inattentiveness in the past and until then.

Thank you very much to those of you who sought me out on various venues to find out how I was doing. It was appreciated.

Before we board, I must apologize for neglecting this blog for so long. I have been both ill and very busy: I've become a columnist on HandMade News which requires that I do a lot of research before I put my name to the words. I first became interested in making jewelry when I commented on liking a pair of my neighbors earrings and she told me that her daughter had made them. I was amazed by the idea that you could make your own earrings and a little seed was planted. The next time I went to my local library I checked out every book I could on jewelry making. I read everything I could on the subject but wasn't really spurred to action until I went to a jewelry party (not the handcrafted kind but a company sponsored one). I loved everything I saw but after reading so much about it I kept thinking to myself I could make that. I figured by this point it was time to stop thinking about it and start doing something. I went home and scoured all my books once again and then made my first piece which I gave to my mom for her birthday. After that there was no stopping me.

Not one to ever do things halfway I went on a shopping spree and started making more than I could ever give away. I first got the thought to sell my jewelry when my neighbor asked if I had anything to sell because she was looking for a gift for her neice. I sold my first piece that day and at the urging of my family and friends decided to create Jewelry by Janzia and here I am."

Today we pull in to the little town of JanelsonArts. This husband and wife team make amazing lampwork beads and do other upcycling and recycling.

Sorry I'm so late, everyone. I got up and took a few pictures then fell asleep at the computer! I'm waking up again now...

Yesterday was surely the wildest train ride I've had in awhile. I was surprised at the depth of everyone's commitment to promoting me and at the results: In all the time I've been on Google Analytics I've never reached 50 unique visitors in a day. Yesterday's unique visitors (which probably excludes anyone who researched to promote me) was 68. If you are anything like me, you did your research first thing Saturday morning, so I know I owe a big thanks to everyone who took time from their Holiday Weekend to my advantage. I completely missed, until this minute, a tragedy in the life of someone I care very much about that took place. Please read about it in her own words, as it may be a cautionary tale.

Today I'm the featured seller on the Crazy Train. I guess I should tell you a little about me and my studio, Alisuns.

My grandbaby borrowed my watch during one trip to Chicago and misplaced it. We looked everywhere for it, but couldn't find it. So I went to a local discount store and bought a replacement that was this kind of dangly charm-bracelet-type thingy. I thought, Gee, that would make a good design for a mother's bracelet....

....so I tried to make some. It took me quite some time to become proficient enough to invest in gold and silver, and my relatives stopped volunteering to be my guinea pig jewelry testers... I found that I really enjoyed making the pretty little things. At first I was going to try to use gemstones, but I couldn't find affordable compatible ones. Then I tried Swarovski Crystals. Now, all my life I've collected as many gemstones as I could. I love sapphires, rubies, and emeralds, but not the highest quality clear glassy kind... and not diamonds. But for some reason I love these crystals, even though they are clearly glass.

I still make a few dangle mother's necklaces (my relatives haven't stopped having babies and need updates or longer necklaces or bracelets), and I love creating a Core of My Heart pair of earrings for a happy lady, but now I really want to learn to wire wrap. I don't have the means to invest in a lot of wire at this time, so I'm practicing stringing beads.

For those who have never strung beads, just let me tell you that it is harder than it looks. For one thing, you must have a vision of the completed project before you even start. If you don't, you may have to completely start over to make an item to your satisfaction. While using wire links, you can just unhook them and move them around....but that bead that is out of place in the middle of the strung necklace means that half of the necklace must be undone to change it.

I sold on eBay for probably a year. It is spending my dollars locally because I live in the Bay area, but it was way too expensive for me. My daughter suggested Etsy, but the fees seemed comparable. Then, when I lost my retail job, I thought I'd have to give up selling completely because I couldn't find the fees.

One of my purchases had a flier for ArtFire.com. I took a look at it and opened the store hoping that I'd have a smaller pool of jewelry makers with which to compete.... Well, if you count the fact that anyone on the site is NOT looking for mass produced jewelry, I guess you can say I've narrowed the field, but with tens of thousands of ArtFire members (not all are sellers) and the majority of them jewelry makers, I can't say that I've carved a niche. :) ArtFire has, however, and it continues to grow in popularity almost exponentially, a trait I don't mind basking in at all.

I have, however, in the three months that I've been on ArtFire learned more about jewelry making and branding and style trends (not that I've ever listened to them) than I had learned in the year before. PicardCreative is the studio of the original author of the Crazy Train. Only Picard would put this into action. She's a seasoned hand made seller with a brick and mortar store in which she sells her own art and that of others.

She has a wicked sense of humor and thought that putting us all to work for her was a great idea, even though she knew how much work she was going to have to do to make it successful. She and Amy, yesterday's stopover, are doing all of the bookkeeping: who will be featured next (since it was first come, first served), that they are indeed verified ArtFire sellers, and that we each get the train to stop at our studio.

Picard sells magnets. She uses vintage images (she even has Lindy music on her site), and interprets the message of the image. She has no quarter for whiners, being a single mom with a business, and she will go out of her way to help someone if she has the answers. Can you tell I like her? And that I'm finally over my head cold?

Happy Sunday, fellow travelers! Today we're going to tour the amazing little town of CaterpillarPeacock, where little things needle felted come to be. Needle felting is the art of repeatedly sticking loose wool with a needle to compact it in various shapes. Sounds time intensive to me!
